Joby Cook learned to kiteboard in 2002 after seeing the potential to ride a wakeboard with a kite pulling him instead of an expensive, gas guzzling boat. He became a PASA certified instructor in 2004. He has kited in such places as Florida, Hawaii, Baja California, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Cape Hatteras, NC as well as all over the Oregon coast and many launches throughout the Columbia River Gorge from Portland to Hermiston.
Being a 'wake style' kiter since day one, Joby has been a rider in the pursuit of stomping fast, technical, wakeboard tricks with speed, style, and the kite low in the sky. Along with several like minded friends and kiters in the Hood River area, he has led the way in building and designing kickers and rails that emulate the features seen in snowboard, wakeboard, and skate parks around the world. In 2008 he co-founded The Slider Project LLC, as a way to fund the features that he and his fellow shredders create.
Joby has competed in several events in the Gorge over the years. For the past three years Joby has been one of twenty four riders in the world to be invited to the SSS Invitational, in Cape Hatteras, NC, allowing him to ride alongside of pros such as Andre Phillip, Jason Slezak, Mauricio Abreau, Shannon Best, Aaron Hadlow, Ruben Lenten, and many of the best wake style kiteboarders in the world.
